About Adelaide

Adelaide is Australia’s fifth largest city with a population of one million people all contributing to its relaxed and friendly environment.

Lifestyle
Adelaide has many attractive features within walking distance or a short bus ride from the campus. One feature which sets Adelaide apart from other Australian cities is the many parks that are found throughout the city centre. For the more adventurous student, trips to the Flinders ranges in the North provide ample opportunity for bush walking, climbing and camping.

Day trips to Victor Harbor (only 1 ½ hours south of Adelaide), at the right time of year, may include whale watching or a range of other water sports for the thrill seeker. More information about activities and events is displayed on student notice boards or is available from the SA Tourist Information Web site.

Culture
Often described as the Festival City, Adelaide has gained a reputation for excellence in performing and visual arts and plays host to internationally renowned events such as The Adelaide Festival of Arts, Barossa Music Festival as well as ethnic food, wine and cultural celebrations.

Weather
South Australia enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate with four distinct seasons that include warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The temperature ranges from an average 15 degrees Celsius (59 Fahrenheit) in July (Winter) to 32 Celsius (90 Fahrenheit) in February (Summer). The average temperature is 25 degrees Celsius.

Cost of Living
Adelaide boasts one of Australia’s lowest costs of living. DIAC suggests that you will need approximately AU$12,000 a year for living expenses (not including tuition fees).

Share Accommodation
You will need approximately $AU 2,000 to pay for the first month’s rent and a rental bond (security deposit), household goods and connection fees for telephone, gas and electricity if you want to set up a share house with friends. Approximately $15 per week will be needed for gas, electricity and water charges (more in winter).

Food and personal items
Fresh food can be bought at a reasonable price in Adelaide. Inexpensive clothing and personal items are readily available. Food will cost approximately $80 per week. Below is a guide to the cost of basic food and personal items.

Transports
SA Transit Information Centre is situated close to the College on the corner of King William & Grenfell streets. Public transport tickets may be purchased on buses, trains and trams, or many retail outlets. Always carry a current ticket with you when you travel on public transport. Please also note that International students are not eligible for student travel concessions.
